If you’re renovating your home, replacing your flooring or looking for a more efficient heating system, milled underfloor heating is one of the best retrofit heating solutions available.
At UFH Experts, our Retro Therma Milled Underfloor Heating System has been specifically developed for existing homes. Instead of raising floor levels or removing your screed, we precision mill channels directly into the existing floor before installing the underfloor heating pipework. The result is a retrofit underfloor heating system with virtually no floor build-up, minimal disruption and fast heat response.
If you’re considering milled underfloor heating, here’s everything you need to know.
What is Milled Underfloor Heating?
Milled underfloor heating is a retrofit heating system designed for properties that already have a screeded floor.
Rather than installing insulation boards and new screed like a traditional underfloor heating system, specialist machinery cuts precise channels into the existing screed. These channels house 16mm underfloor heating pipe, which is then connected to a manifold and your existing boiler or heat pump.
Once the pipework has been installed and pressure tested, the channels are filled with a high-performance cementitious latex compound before your chosen floor finish is installed. This creates a seamless heating system without significantly increasing floor height.
For many homeowners, it’s the ideal way to enjoy the comfort and efficiency of water underfloor heating without major building work.
Why Choose the Retro Therma Milled System?
Traditional retrofit systems often require overlay boards that increase finished floor levels by 18–25mm. That can mean trimming doors, adjusting skirting boards and altering kitchen plinths.
Our Retro Therma Milled Underfloor Heating System avoids those problems.
Because the pipework sits inside the existing screed, there is virtually zero floor build-up while maintaining excellent heat transfer.
Key benefits include:
- Virtually dust-free installation
- Zero floor build-up
- Fast heat response
- Lower running costs
- Compatible with heat pumps
- Suitable for most existing screed floors
- Minimal disruption
- Works with most floor finishes
- Even heat distribution
- Removes the need for radiators in many properties
How Does the Milled Underfloor Heating Installation Process Work?
Every project begins with a survey to determine whether the floor is suitable for milling.
Step 1 – Floor Assessment
We first identify the existing floor construction.
Typical floor types include:
- Sand and cement screed
- Anhydrite screed
- Cementitious flowing screed
- Concrete (where suitable preparation may be required)
We’ll also assess the strength and condition of the floor before any work begins.
Step 2 – Design
Every property is different.
Our designers produce a bespoke pipe layout based on the room sizes, manifold location and heating requirements.
We also produce zoning drawings and thermostat layouts where required.
Step 3 – Precision Floor Milling
This is where the transformation begins.
Using specialist milling equipment with industrial HEPA dust extraction, we cut precision channels approximately 16–17mm wide and 20mm deep into the existing screed.
Our pipe layouts are designed using proven reverse return or bifilar patterns to provide even heat distribution across the entire floor.
Step 4 – Pipe Installation
Premium underfloor heating pipe is installed into the newly milled channels before being connected back to the manifold.
Every circuit is pressure tested before the floor is covered.
Step 5 – Protecting the Pipework
Once testing has been completed, we apply a high-quality cementitious latex compound over the channels.
This protects the pipework while creating a smooth surface ready for your chosen flooring.
Step 6 – Final Floor Finish
Once cured, your chosen flooring can be installed.
The result is an efficient heating system hidden completely beneath the finished floor.
Which Floor Coverings Can Be Used With Milled Underfloor Heating?
One of the biggest advantages of Retro Therma is its compatibility with almost every modern flooring finish.
Porcelain & Ceramic Tiles
Excellent heat transfer and probably the most efficient flooring option.
Engineered Timber
A popular choice for modern homes.
We recommend temperature sensors to protect the timber, as engineered wood typically shouldn’t exceed a floor temperature of around 27°C.
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
LVT performs exceptionally well over milled underfloor heating.
A liquid levelling screed, suitable adhesive and temperature sensors should always be used to protect the flooring and comply with manufacturer recommendations.
Carpet
Yes, carpet is absolutely suitable.
The combined carpet and underlay should generally not exceed 2.25 TOG to allow efficient heat transfer.
Stone & Resin Floors
Natural stone, resin and micro cement finishes all work extremely well thanks to their excellent thermal conductivity.
Is Milled Underfloor Heating Energy Efficient?
Absolutely.
Because the pipework sits much closer to the finished floor than traditional screeded systems, the floor warms up much faster.
That means:
- Faster response times
- Lower water temperatures
- Improved efficiency
- Reduced running costs
When paired with an air source heat pump, milled underfloor heating becomes one of the most efficient heating solutions available for existing homes.
Is My Home Suitable for Floor Milling?
Our Retro Therma Milled Underfloor Heating System is ideal for:
- Existing homes
- Property renovations
- Kitchen refurbishments
- Home extensions
- Barn conversions
- Apartments
- Commercial buildings
- Offices
- Heritage properties where floor levels must remain unchanged
If your home already has a suitable screeded floor, there’s a good chance it can be retrofitted with underfloor heating without major structural work.
